Noneliness

Everyone needs a safe harbor to start a new journey.
Well, you have just found yours :)

HELP

Noneliness app is a gamified social app to facilitate communication between students and university staff. Besides offering a secure virtual community to exchange text messages, the resource also offers different modalities of social interaction according to the users' needs, such as organizing meetings, seeking psychological support (both from other students and the institution’s professionals), establishing new friendships through affinities or just setting up discussion groups about a specific subject. The application is free and can be accessed through a mobile or computer browser.

Please also access our Community Guidelines for a better understanding about the purposes and dynamics of the application.

Please access the gear icon > Personal Information. Click on the brush icon, enter your desired information (name, date of birth, location, interests and about) in the “Biography” tab and don’t forget to hit the “Save Changes” button.

If you want to update your profile picture, please go to the “Picture” tab, click on the brush icon, upload your new image (PNG or JPG, max 2MB) and don’t forget to hit the “Save Changes” button.

PS.: While we encourage users to identify themselves for respectful interaction among university members, we will respect those who wish to remain anonymous for sensitive issues. To do so, please feel free to create a nickname and enter an anonymous profile image.

Quests: the idea behind this option is based on solving a task for someone in the community who needs help, either material (e.g., loan of some tool, book, etc), emotional, informational or educational (e.g., help with some subject at university). These Quests are posted in text form and the first user to solve it (via chat room interaction) receives a reward (+1 Gratitude Point | +15 EXP). When the request is fulfilled, the Quest’s owner can check the best answer received. This feature was designed to encourage community members to be more helpful to each other and to encourage social connectedness.

Therefore, Quests' rules and main functionalities are:

  • Users need to have at least 1 Gratitude Point to post a Quest. If you don't have any, we strongly suggest joining other conversations and spaces to receive such a point through social interactions;
  • 1 Gratitude Point will be deducted from the Quest's creator when he/she marks another person's answer with a check mark ("✔"). The person who received this mark will receive the point and 15 EXP;
  • Only Quest's creator has the possibility to mark the answer that solves his/her problem. A check mark is displayed above the heart icon (Gratitude Point donation button). This "check" button is only visible to the Quest creator, but once activated, it'll be visible to all participants in the room;
  • The message marked with check mark will then be pinned at the top of the chat screen related to that Quest, so other users can benefit from that information as well;
  • Maximum number of participants is 50 by default;
  • If the Quest's creator deletes the Quest, she/he won't recover the 1 Gratitude Point. Think twice before posting it;
  • Solved Quests appear both in the Home option and within the "Open and Solved" Quests tab. Users can continue to use the Quest's chat to keep chatting and other users are able join in anytime;
  • Quests marked with a check mark will receive the tag [Solved] alongside the title and will be uneditable.

Events: allow users to join or create a local event for a certain activity at a specified time and location (e.g., art exhibition, concert, face-to-face or online meetup). These events are pulled by the users themselves and can also be used by the university staff to create and promote their own social and institutional activities.

Groups: groups are socializing environments that work as discussion forums about a particular topic. Such groups allow a large number of people to participate and can be created by either students or university staff.

Chats: whenever a Quest, Event or Group is accessed, a text-based chat window is opened. It allows users to talk about the proposed subject. Also in this option you can view the history of all your conversations as well as your private messages (in the Private Messages tab).

Look for an Event/Quest available accessing them from the footer menu (image below) or an open Group from the hamburger top-left menu.
After accessing the card with the desired subject from one of these categories, click on the “Join Chat” button to participate in the discussions on the subject. Once you join one of these chat rooms, you will be able to interact with the users via text messages, emojis and stickers.

Access Event/Quest from the footer menu or Group from the hamburger top-left menu.
Click on the “+” icon in the right bottom of your screen.
Enter all the information required and hit “Post my (...)”.
Then your social space will be displayed publicly on the Home’s and will be seen by everyone that accesses the app.

Levels denote the degree of experience that users have of using the application. The higher a user's level number is, the more experience he/she has using the platform. Some items in the Add-ons option also require the user to have reached a certain level before they can be purchased.
The level number can be increased by gaining Experience Points. See the next topic for how to acquire these points.

PS.: The maximum level number is 99.

Experience Points are scores that are acquired through social interactions in the application. To earn these points, please see the table below that shows the app’s possible social actions and how many points they grant for the user:
ACTION EXP POINT
Every message sent in a Quest, Event, Group or Private Message +3 EXP
Every message deleted -1 EXP
Every Gratitude Point Donated +15 EXP
Every Gratitude Point Received +15 EXP
Each new connection with a user +50 EXP
Every friendship undone -10 EXP
Every gift given to someone +30 EXP

PS: Every time a user achieves a new level, she/he receives 5 Gratitude Points (see below about these points).

As the name implies, Gratitude Points is a score that serves to show appreciation and empathy in your social interaction, which can be acquired or donated. For example, if someone posts a message that is welcoming or helpful, you can donate one of your points to them as a gesture to show how grateful. The same applies when you are the author’s message and someone finds your message meaningful.
These points can be donated by clicking on the heart icon next to the messages in the chat rooms (image below). It is important to note that when you donate a point, it is taken from your total amount and added to the author's of the message.

Gratitude Points can also be used to buy items in the Add-ons option. Please see the topic “What are Items and how to buy them?” for more information.

In the user’s profile page (which can be accessed by clicking on his/her picture profile in any chat screen) manage the friendship by clicking on the “Request Friendship”, “Accept request” or “Cancel connection”.

To manage your connections, go to “Friends” in the hamburger top-left menu. On the “Connections” tab you can manage your friendships already established, such as disconnect from a particular person and see who’s online or offline.
On the “Friendship request” tab you can manage all your friendship requests by accepting or declining them (don’t worry, they won’t be notified about it).

If you want to look for more friends. access the “ Search more connections”. You can filter your search by name, age and location.

In the user’s profile page (which can be accessed by clicking on his/her picture profile) click on the “Mail” icon , which will redirect you to a private chat menu.

Private Messages are stored under the Chat options (footer menu) > Private Messages tab. They are not public, only you both can see them.

To format the message follow the steps below:

  • Italic: insert two (2) underscore on each side of the text, as in “__text__” (Without the quotes);
  • Bold: insert 2 (two) asterisks in each side of the text, as in “**text**” (Without the quotes);
  • Underlined: insert 2 (two) dashes in each side of the text, as in “--text--” (Without the quotes);
  • Strikethrough: insert 2 (two) tildes in each side of the text, like in “~~text~~” (Without the quotes);
  • Link: Insert “[link]” at the beginning and “[/link]” at the end of your link, as in “[link]https://gratitude.affective-lab.org[/link]” (Without the quotes).

Example: **Hello!** __How are you__ ~~today~~ --now--? [link]https://gratitude.affective-lab.org[/link]
Result: Hello! How are you today now? https://gratitude.affective-lab.org

Gifts are items that can be purchased in the Add-ons option and can be sent to one of your contacts. These items can function as "coupons" valid to be used in the physical world, such as inviting a contact for coffee, a movie, or ice cream, for example.

To send a Gift to someone, go to the user’s profile page (which can be accessed by clicking on her/his picture profile) and click on the “Gift” icon. If you have “Gifts” available to be given, click on one of them and your friend is going to receive a notification about the item received.

If you don’t have any Gifts available, you need to buy them from the “Add-ons” menu (learn more below).

Items are cosmetic features that can be purchased under the Add-ons option (in the footer menu). For example, you can use your earned Gratitude Points to buy new stickers for chats (which are added automatically to your chats), picture frames, new chat backgrounds and gifts to send to you friends. Furthermore, to buy such items you also need to have reached a specific level of experience.

All purchased or received items are stored in the tab “Inventory”, in the Add-ons option.

PS.: Please note that no real money is used on this platform.

For more information, please also see “What are and how to gain and donate Gratitude Points” and “What is and how to enhance my Level” in this help list.

As soon as you set up your account, you will receive a notification asking to visit the platform’s Achievements (which can also be accessed in the left side menu). Achievements are badges that are earned every time the user reaches specific parameters through social interactions in the application. If the user earns all achievements, he/she will be eligible to receive a secret gift from the Affective & Cognitive Institute. To do so, simply send a screenshot of your acquired Achievements screen, email address and username to rbordini@stud.hs-offenburg.de (Rogério Bordini), then you will receive instructions to pick it up in our laboratory at a specified time and day :)

Your opinion is fundamental for us to improve the platform. Please take a few minutes to fill one of our surveys:

Go to the Gear icon and access the “Language” list. For now we only have a few options, but we are working to increase the number of languages.

Go to the “Forgot Password?” from the home page and you will receive a code to reset it.

Go to the Gear icon and click on the “Log out” icon.

I hope to see you soon again!

Please send an e-mail to rbordini@stud.hs-offenburg.de requesting the deletion of your account.

Community Guidelines

What is the Noneliness App

Noneliness App was developed with the aim of creating social opportunities to approximate local users in the university community. Moreover, the app has the aim to encourage people to be more charitable to each other, be it devoting part of their time to helping others with favors or just listening to their problems. Gamified elements were applied in order to help users be more motivated to use the app, by collecting and distributing Gratitude Points and gaining Experience by completing tasks. These rewards can be exchanged by purchasing items on the Add-ons tab, where new accessories, backgrounds and features can be acquired. This is a free app. At no point will we require you to spend your real money on the purchase of store items or even to access the app.

What we want from you

We hope you use Noneliness App as form of self-improvement, expand your social network by connecting with people from your community and feel comfortable in asking for support for problems of any nature in our community. Therefore we expect the following social and psychological benefits:

  • Self-expression: Noneliness is the place for you to express yourself. Sharing your thoughts and feelings helps you chill out and lift your mood;
  • Supporting each other: Noneliness strives to create a safe and supportive place where people, through shared feelings and experiences, help each other navigate through rough waters. Your expression generates energy that may inspire others embarking on their own journey of self-discovery and happiness;
  • Enrichment: we want every experience on Noneliness to add value to your life – be it gaining a new perspective, discovering a passion, influencing people for social change, satisfaction through helping others or refining the art of articulating your feelings or opinions. We want Noneliness to be a place for you to grow;
  • Fun: Explore, exchange views, reflect and meet new people. Importantly we want you to have lots of fun and laughter – this is a great way to relieve stress and help make your worries fly away. Humour and playful communication brings people together, helps overcome challenges and inspires hope. Seek out the numerous uplifting people that have found a place on Noneliness or explore the lighter emotions for a powerful and instant boost;
  • Privacy: Noneliness respects the importance of social gatherings that take place away from the prying eyes of those that you may know. We believe that you should have control over how you interact with our community. You may choose to expand your horizons, sharing emotions or experimenting with different personalities, with interesting people from all around the world. If you are after something more familiar then inviting your friends from your personal life or connections from other social networks may be the way to go. An even more intimate experience is also achievable for those that would rather surround themselves with trusted listeners or simply use the app as a personal journal.
  • Gratitude now! We want people to be the best of themselves by practicing gratitude through simple and meaningful actions, be it a brief chat about personal problems or inviting users for a coffee. That's it. Our app is just a bridge between the users who want to connect and increase their social groups and get rid of loneliness.

What we expect from our community

Noneliness App is a place where different people from your community can come to share emotions, ask for favors and post social events. We are unwavering in our determination to foster a respectful and understanding community. In order to preserve people’s safety and promote respect, Noneliness may delete your content or accounts without prior notice if you harass, threaten, stalk or attempt to humiliate or publicly shame others or use hate language.

We ask our community to exist harmoniously and embrace the richness of diversity. Users must not post offensive content against any ethnicity, race, gender identity, sexual orientation or religion.

Noneliness asks that you DO NOT call out, name drop or shame other users that have interacted with you in a manner which makes you uncomfortable. Privacy features such as the ability to Report a user or set your account to Private are at your disposal and should be used in such circumstances. If you still feel that a user is deliberately spamming or harassing you, then please click the "report" button located on the user's profile or send an email to the application developers (rbordini@stud.hs-offenburg.de) so that we can take the necessary actions to guarantee the safety of our users.

  • Disrespect our systems – do not interfere with or disrupt the Site or the servers or networks connected to the Site

Precautions with in person meetings

Noneliness App highly encourages users to meet personally in order to expand their social networks and make the community closer and more united. However, meeting someone who you met on the app requires some precautions:

  • Avoid giving away any personal information: in general, you want to avoid telling anyone too much about yourself until you've met them face-to-face. Get to know them a little better before you tell them your address, your birthday, and your life history. If they're being safe, they won't reveal any personal information either. This can make it difficult to look into their background, but try to respect that they have the same privacy concerns you do;
  • Take it slow: it can be easy to divulge too much information about yourself too quickly when you're talking online – especially if you talk to the person frequently. Keep your emotions in check and check yourself regularly to make sure you're not getting ahead of yourself. When it comes the time for a in person meeting, we highly recommend making phone or live video calls to make sure they are who they've said they are;
  • Choose a place where you're comfortable: often you will feel more comfortable in a place where you've been several times. Try to meet during the day, if possible. If you're both only available in the evening, choose a place that's fairly busy at the time you're planning to meet (e.g. coffee shops, restaurants, ice cream stores);
  • Bring a friend: If you're really nervous about meeting the person, bring a friend along with you or organize a group date with several friends. Bring someone who knows the area, especially if you're meeting the person further away from home, or in an unfamiliar part of town;
  • Let someone aware where you're going: always make sure that several people know exactly where you're going and when;
  • Report threatening or dangerous behavior: If the meeting goes really bad, and the person turns out to be someone dangerous, report them to the local police as well as to the Noneliness App developers (rbordini@stud.hs-offenburg.de) and we will manage to get them banned.

Awareness against serious mental health issues

We also want to raise awareness of issues affecting people as we believe this can be a helpful way of coping and getting through a difficult period. Having said this, if you know someone who may have thoughts of self-harm or is going through a tough time, then there are services that can help:
